The bustling town of Alaró is located in a quiet valley south of the Sierra de Tramuntana in Mallorca. Despite being a minor tourist destination, Alaró has a lot to offer its visitors. History & Culture of Alaró

Originally, it was believed the area was part of an Arab farmhouse called Oloron and the first record of the history of Alaró dates from the 12th century during the catholic conquest of Mallorca. The industry played an important role in the growth and development of Alaró. Specifically, the most important industry for Alaró was the manufacture of footwear.

At its peak there were 30 factories employing over 2,000 people. To this day it is still the home of the workshop of Tony Mora, known worldwide for his handmade cowboy boots.Currently, Alaró has a large international community.

 

 

Top landmarks in Alaró

The main attraction in Alaró is the Castell d’Alaro, considered a must-see for anyone in the area. The castle is about a two-hour walk from the center of town. You can travel part of the way by car and park at the well-known restaurant Es Verger.

Once you arrive at the castle, you will be rewarded by its stunning views. You can admire the Majorcan countryside and you can even see the bay of Palma.

Things to do in Alaró

Being on the slopes of the Sierra de la Tramuntana, Alaró has become an attractive town for cyclists and hikers. Many amateur and professional cyclists take advantage of easy access to some of the best trails on the island. In the surroundings of you will find several well-known trails. You will also find several hotels and also catering companies for events.

The main square of Alaró is an ideal place to enjoy a relaxed afternoon. A popular pizza restaurant and ice cream stand are the main draw for the young crowd. Exploring the narrow streets around the main square is a good plan for all tastes. Alaró is a multicultural town with a lively atmosphere. On Saturdays the weekly market is held in Alaró. From 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., visitors can buy fresh produce, clothing, and local handicrafts.

 

 

Alaró Restaurants

The main square and its surroundings are full of restaurants of all kinds. First level cuisine and good wines will conquer your palate. If you have children, the best option will be a restaurant in the main square, where there will be enough space for them to play. A good plan is to have an ice cream at La Isla del Gelato after dinner. This ice cream parlor is one of the favorite places for residents and tourists. A few minutes from the town is the well-known restaurant Es Verger.

The restaurant specializing in lamb is run by a family that uses traditional methods to prepare the different dishes.

The views are a great added value. In the nearby town, Santa María, we recommend the restaurant “Molí des Torrent”, while in Orient, which is only a few minutes away by car, the Mandala Restaurant offers French, Spanish and Asian fusion cuisine.

Events in Alaró 

Various festivals are celebrated. The celebration of San Roque takes place in the week of August 16 each year and consists of a procession of giants that parade through the main square. There is also a craft fair at the beginning of October. Master craftsmen from all over Mallorca come to Alaró to show their works.
